Its history began on January 20, 1857, when John Brandon arrived at Fort Brooke (now Tampa) from Mississippi with his wife Martha and six sons. At first he moved his family to what is now the Seffner area. Then in August 1858, John Brandon purchased 40 acres of land in the New Hope area (now Brandon) south of Hopewell Road (now SR 60), between Parsons Avenue and Lithia Road. Nine years later, after his wife died, John left everything he owned to his son James Henry Brandon and moved to Bartow. In 1876 James built a home for his wife Joanna. It is still standing today and is now Stowers Funeral Home, a well-known landmark on Brandon Boulevard. Meanwhile, John Brandon remarried a widow named Victoria and moved back to New Hope in 1874. John bought 160 acres and named his land Brandon. John and Victoria's house was located on what would become the corner of Knights and Victoria Street. TALLAHASSEE - The once-a-decade process of redrawing the state’s political lines has left a big footprint on the First Coast.
The area is left with its first open congressional seats — two, to be exact — since U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw replaced Tillie Fowler in 2000, competitive state Senate races, Clay County with entirely new representation in Tallahassee and Duval County with a smaller presence in the state Capitol.

Rene Naughton heading Florida Pilot district

St. Augustine resident Rene Naughton was installed as the governor of the Florida District of Pilot International April 28, the highlight of the three-day district convention held at the Shores Spa and Resort in Daytona Beach.
Sara Hetherington, also a member of the local club, began her second year as a lieutenant governor for the Florida district. The Florida district, which is the third largest district, is part of the international organization of Pilot Clubs with headquarters in Macon, Ga. The organization is dedicated to community service.

“Did you see that? Do you need me to slow it down for you?” he asked the audience of about 600 at Flagler Auditorium Saturday evening as he stood onstage and cracked his 18-foot whip to slice off the end of a red straw he held behind his back.
